‘The Rocks Remember’ (2021), 101.6 x 101.6cm /40”x40” acrylic on canvas, mixed media. This piece is both a lament and a protest. It was inspired by my recent visit to Murujuga, also known as Burrup Peninsula, Dampier, which is home to the largest petroglyph site in the world – more than a million rock art images document Ngarda-Ngarli culture dating from 50,000 years ago to the mid-19th century. It is truly humbling to witness and backdropped against the pristine turquoise waters of Honeymoon Cove, it is stunning to behold. Then, you turn around to see art meet industry. The Peninsula is also home to intensive mining, shipping, and industrial processing, and the threat could not be more jarring. I felt a deep sadness for the way our lands have changed under our employment, and also a fierce need to protect the wonderful natural records we still have of the way we once connected with the Earth. .
