This painting tells a story of faith in positivity blossoming from the seeds of uncertainty. I am frequently inspired by the poetic expression of a sensation or a mood. On the day I began this painting, I was observing lockdown restrictions, courtesy of a Covid outbreak in my city, feeling ready for the world to move into a more predictable post-pandemic mode.

The poet Patrick Overton’s words came to mind and I meditated on them while expressing my own interpretation of faith through this painting.

“When you walk to the edge of all the light you have

and take that first step into the darkness of the unknown,

you must believe that one of two things will happen:

There will be something solid for you to stand upon,

or, you will be taught how to fly.”
