‘Red Herring’ (2025), 80cm x 80cm acrylic on canvas, graphite, oil pastel.

This piece is called Red Herring, and yep—there’s a bit of a cheeky double meaning going on. At first glance, you’ve got this bold, blazing red figure right in the centre. It steals your eye instantly… but is it the real story, or is it just there to throw you off?

The term “red herring” is all about misdirection—a clue that leads you the wrong way. And I liked playing with that idea visually here. Maybe it’s a fish, maybe it’s a red bull or something else entirely, or maybe the real meaning is just under the surface.

There’s also something cinematic about it—like a scene paused mid-drama. You get the feeling there’s more going on behind the horizon line, something just out of reach. So Red Herring invites you in, then lets you decide what you think it’s really about.
